John Bonar was appointed teacher in charge of
Ladyhill School on March 1, 1850, and retired from
the principalship on June 6, 1895. At the time of
his retirement the Inspector's report described
the school as "satisfactory." In earlier reports
the inspector (in 1892) commented "A map of Europe
is absolutely necessary," and, (in 1893) "An
attendance book should be got." In winter, as
many as 100 pupils attended. John Bonar received
44 pounds per year, which, with scholars' fees,
brought the grand total up to sixty pounds. And
on top of teaching the schoolmaster managed his
28-acre farm.
