GALEX Diffuse UV Background

11. Can we trust the Pipeline Background? Yes!

 11.01
Sujatha has carried out experiments in GALEX image point-source removal, leaving "holes" where point sources are identified. She has not reported any suggestion, as a result of this work, that the Pipeline background is not giving us the true background. Another thing we have done is create a MOVIE which shows, for our Target One, for each of the 3840 slices of the image in succession, the average of 30 pixels of the image (green), AND the average of 30 pixels of the Pipeline diffuse background (red). You will see that the Pipeline background DOES seem to do an EXCELLENT job of characterizing the diffuse background.

The above movie involved taking averages of thirty pixels along each strip. Here is the same thing, but at full resolution. (Only the central twenty strips are given, to keep the movie of manageable size).

Finally, we show the identical movie to the preceding, except that we do NOT connect the dots: DOTS MOVIE. You will see that we are getting typically TWO counts per pixel, with our 13,420 seconds of observation on Target One in FUV.
